What is Pilates?
Pilates is a full body workout developed to strengthen the core, increase flexibility, decrease muscle imbalance and promote proper postural alignment. Joseph Pilates believed that the core, where all Pilates movement is initiated, must be strong before working other parts of the body. There are multiple pieces of equipment as well as a classical mat repertoire all designed to simultaneously stretch and strengthen muscles. At Mililani Physical Therapy, the reformer is used for it’s versatility and adaptability for a wide range of clients. Clients can expect a customized workout focusing on their individual movement and fitness goals. Patients recovering from injuries or illnesses greatly benefit from Pilates due to it’s ability to target specific muscle groups in a safe and controlled environment. Not only can Pilates be a great rehabilitation technique, it is a great cross-training tool for athletes of all ages!
Who is Joseph Pilates?
Joseph Pilates, after whom Pilates was named, was born in Germany in 1880. He was a sickly child who was determined to make himself strong and healthy. He took up bodybuilding, gymnastics, martial arts and boxing. After the outbreak of World War I, Joseph Pilates was held in a British internment camp. During his internment, he attached springs to hospital beds to rehabilitate multiple bed-bound patients at a time. Alas, the first Pilates equipment was born.
In 1923, Joseph Pilates opened his first Pilates studio in New York City with his wife, Clara, whom he met on the ship to the US. Pilates or “Contrology” as Joseph called it, was a hit among many professional dancers such as George Balanchine of the New York City Ballet and Martha Graham of the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance as it was the best way to recover from injuries and prevent their recurrence.
